France: A Museum in a Pool!

I just want to go to the piscine museum! What a play on words for English speakers… but I really do want to go!

Located in the city of Roubaix in northern France, there’s the most beautiful swimming pool in the world. Well, that was exactly the brief when commissioned by its Mayor many moons ago. Flashforward and the swimming pool (‘la piscine’ in French for the handful who don’t have a GCSE in it), is now a cracking art deco museum. AND I am in stitches over scrolling their Insta and looking at statues appearing to be waiting for a dip in the pool. I feel like there has to be a film about them secretly coming alive each night.

Of course its centrepiece is still a massive swimming pool but the place hasn’t even lost its Victorian baths-style tiled walls either. A tile here, a tile there, oh and an extremely expensive panting there. I love it when random things are paired together, and would love to go and snap some pics inside.

Cheeky statues line the main pool area, whilst the old showers and changing rooms have been transformed into glass cases and consulting rooms. If you’re anything like me, after inspiring yourself, it’s time to fill your face and hit a gift shop, and thankfully they’ve got both. You can grab a snack in the old pump room, then go get your shop on in its former filter room.

In less masky times, the museum is often no stranger to hosting events, which includes fashion shows. One of the best things about going to fashion shows is exploring the cool venues. Although, these days I’d only go to sustainable shows, so who knows what kind of venue I’d end up at… wind turbine?!

They also regularly open their doors to arts students and amateur Artists to come and indulge in an evening of life drawing. Personally, I’m too immature for spending an afternoon drawing somebody’s crack.

Like everybody and everything in the world, the museum had to shut up shop for a while due to the Rona, but they did help out some Musicians by streaming a ‘Poolside Sesh’ or two. Yes, I gave it that name, not them.
